Earlier this year, Bay County was the recipient of a blunt sum of $1.4 million from 2021 marijuana tax dollars - its slice of the $42-million-plus pie generated by 2021 marijuana tax revenue in Michigan. Only Washtenaw County, with $1.8 million, received more funds. As the marijuana industry finds its legs, Bay County is among the areas experiencing the positive impact of the emergence of the marijuana industry.
Saginaw has taken notice, joining its neighbors in Bangor Township, Chesaning, Vassar, and other jurisdictions reaping the rewards. As a whole, Michigan has embraced the transition of “weed” to “flower” as shops pop up in Saginaw, Gladwin, Omer, and even Kalkaska, where the Kalkushka Lounge opened earlier this year.
As Bay City shakes out the competition through the balancing process of supply and demand, some shops have closed or merged. Lume, which boasts 32 stores in Michigan and recently opened in Saginaw, closed its Downtown Bay City store in July. Dispo has consolidated its assets, closing its Fire Creek location and rebranding its Hashish Boyz store at 305 N. Euclid as Dispo Bay City South. Skymint has also downsized out of Bay City, closing its Wilder Road and Downtown locations.
Still, there continues to be an influx of new shops opening around town.
Remedy Room, which has operated out of Jurupa Valley, California, for the past few years but has ownership interests from the Saginaw area, opened its Bay City store at 712 Washington Ave. on August 8. Remedy Room Director of Operations Spence Anderson looks forward to building a presence in his home state after spending more than 10 years on the West Coast. “We have a proven track record, we cracked the matrix in Southern California, we’re one of the busiest shops,” he says. “We knew it was over-saturated [here], but we have a different business model, so we’re not too worried [about getting lost in the competition].”
Remedy Room has built partnerships with Rich n Ruthless, a cannabis company owned by Lil Eazy E. With special events being planned for later this year and beyond, Anderson is hoping to bring the rapper and other California personalities that the brand maintains relationships with to the area for special events.
Bangor Township Supervisor Glenn Rowley has overseen the activity over the past three years, as Bangor Township has been one of the leaders in licensing and thus received the lion’s share of Bay County’s windfall tax revenues. “Right now you can buy it cheaper than you can grow it,” he quipped in response to the prices leveling out as the supply-and-demand dance plays out with the thriving commodity.
Bay City native Justin Elias, who owns Puff Cannabis, was around since the early days, and he appreciates how the industry has taken off in the area. “I love what Bay County has done,” says Elias, whose flagship store is located at 1680 Marquette Ave. “They passed the right laws, and Michigan as a whole has excelled – the stigma [about cannabis] has been lifted and the leadership here, especially Glenn Rowley and Bangor Township, has been ahead of the curve.”
As Puff looks to expand on the East Coast and even Missouri in the next year, Elias does not plan on neglecting his home region. “Puff is here to become a household name. We’re creating a lifestyle brand.”
