Brandon Calhoon brings his brand of “stripped down rock and soul” to Bay City’s State Theater on the evening of November 24th for the release of his new album of original music, “Let It Ride.”

The event is somewhat of a homecoming for Calhoon, a Beaverton native who currently resides in Nashville after years of honing his craft in the Detroit area.

While “Let It Ride” was recorded in Nashville, the project’s Bay City connections began when Calhoon enlisted Andy Reed of Reed Recording Company to mix and master the recording.

As Calhoon described, “The production of a record is a different process from the mixing and mastering.  I knew Andy had an ear for what I wanted this record to sound like, so I was glad when he agreed to do it.”

It was also Reed’s suggestion that resulted in Calhoon choosing the “centrally located” State to debut the album, backed by an “All Star Band” of some of the regions finest musicians.

As Calhoon tells it, he first became familiar with Reed, as well as keyboardist Mike Thomas and guitarists Scott Van Dell and Michael Robertson when he used to visit Bay Music as a budding musician.  When Reed presented the opportunity to play with this cast, rounded out by veteran drummer Donny Brown, harmonica ace Ron "Rosco" Shelley and vocalist Honesty Elliott, Calhoon immediately embraced it.

“These are some of my favorite musicians, and I say that living in Nashville where there are so many good players.  These guys can play with anybody.”

The fact that Bay City was somewhat centrally located for Michigan based family, friends and fans sealed the deal.

The new 12 song set was put together by Calhoon with the backing of Rusted Rooster Media, from Midland.  The company has been instrumental in his career to date, which has featured some high-profile opportunities with songs licensed for network television shows, the NFL and General Motors.   The first single from the album, “Greyhound to Georgia” has been released and has received a strong reaction from fans of Calhoon sly, gritty, rootsy style.

Tickets for the CD Release party are $12 and can be obtained through the State Theater box office or online through their website (www.statetheatrebaycity.com).   Barbarossa Brothers will be the opening act for the evening of music, which begins at 7:00 PM.  Doors open at 6:00 PM for the general admission show.

More information can be found on the State Theatre web page or on Calhoon’s Facebook event page.
