What kid—or kid at heart—doesn't love Legos, Star Wars, Star Trek, space in general or all things secret agent?  The Castle Museum aims to give guests a taste of this childhood nostalgia with their new traveling exhibit, Spies and Space: Toys of the Cold War Era, opening on September 14.

Brought to the museum by SuperMonsterCity, which focuses on exhibits based around popular culture, Spies and Space offers a dynamic traveling exhibition which displays hundreds of vintage toys, games, comic books, posters, media and more, from both the US and the former Soviet Union.

Besides being amazingly fun, this exhibit demonstrates how iconic American fictional characters serve as an historical documentation of creativity, reflect changing values, and impact culture across the decades.

According to Castle Museum CEO and President, Jonathan Webb, “for those of us that grew up during the Cold War Era, this exhibit will be of tremendous personal interest, and for those younger generations, toys of the past are always a popular medium.”

Spies and Space will open in Centennial Hall, the museum’s largest exhibit area, on Saturday, September 14 with a FREE to the public Cold War-Era costume party from 5:30-7:30 p.m., offering themed light refreshments such as astronaut ice cream and Tang, and a chance to meet the collector, David Barnhill. Those seeking a more in-depth background on the toys are invited to join Barnhill for a collector's talk at 4:30 p.m.before the exhibit opening.

Spies and Space will run through the end of 2024 at the Castle Museum and will be joined by a lobby exhibit featuring a selection of space-related items on loan from the Michigan Heroes Museum in Frankenmuth as well.
