The Great Lakes Loons opened a four game series with the West Michigan Whitecaps at the Dow Diamond Thursday evening with a 5-2 loss.   The Loons will play two games at the Dow and then travel to Comstock Park to play 2 games at Fifth Third Field against their in state rivals the Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers affiliate) over the Fourth of July weekend.

Whitecap starting pitcher Artie Lewicki would pitch into the sixth inning for the Whitecaps and limiting them to just 2 runs in the 2nd inning.   The Whitecaps would wait until mid game to start the scoring with runs in the 4th, 5th, 6th and 8th innings while knocking out 11 hits off the Loons pitching staff.

The Loons drop to 3-5 in the 2nd half of the Midwest League season.  Great Lakes is now 41-35 overall during the 2015 campaign to date.   Leading the Loons tonight were Justin Chigbogu and Federico Celli with two hits each.  Chigbogu would hit his 4th home run of the season to get the Loons on the board.

4,213 fans enjoyed a perfect weather evening at the Dow Diamond's "Back to the Future Evening."   The Loons will start their #1 draft choice for the 2014 draft tomorrow.  Grant Holmes is 4-0 with a respectable 3.30 ERA to date.   I'm beginning to think that he might get the call to move up in the Dodger organization before the Midwest League season ends.

Many fans in attendance tonight were their to see first hand the Detroit Tigers #1 draft choice from the 2014 draft as well.  Derek Hill would have two hits on the evening and cover a lot of ground from his center field position.   I can see some potential in this high draft choice for the Tigers.
