The Great Lakes Loons raced to a 1-0 lead in the Eastern Division Finals of the Midwest League last night with a 4-1 victory over the West Michigan Whitecaps.  In front of 1,391 fans on a great evening weather wise the Loons were in a battle for 6 1/2 innings with the Whitecaps before busting it open in the bottom of the seventh.   Four singles and a walk would provide the fire power to score 3 runs for the 4-1 final score.

The big blow in the bottom of the seventh was the bases loaded single back up the middle by Saige Jenco to score two runs.  Then Brendon Davis would follow with another single to score Darrin Tubbs to make it a 4-1 Loons lead.   Caleb Ferguson would pitch 5 strong innings for the Loons to keep the Whitecaps in check.   Ivan Vietez would come on in relief and become the pitcher of record getting the win.   Logan Landon and Jake Henson again would pace the Loons with two hits each but the single by Saige Jenco really got the crowd into the game from the 7th inning on.

The Loons have never advanced beyond the Eastern Division Finals in the 10 year history of the team.   However the team has come alive the last 4 weeks hitting the ball in bunches and getting some solid pitching.   The series now shifts to Grand Rapids the home of West Michigan Whitecaps for the final two games (if needed) of the best of three series.  Then it is on to the Midwest League Championship of which West Michigan is the 2015 Midwest League Champs.   It would be a feather in the cap for the Loons to advance and bring some real excitement  to Dow Diamond in mid-September.    We will wait and see how the Loons fair in Grand Rapids.  It has been a special four weeks let's see if they can keep it going for another 7 days or so.
