When you consider the fact that every city, township, county, and village in Michigan will reap more than $59,000 this year for every licensed retail store and microbusiness within its jurisdiction, going “green” makes a lot of sense.
In 2023, Michigan municipalities that have opted-in for recreational dispensary licensing benefited to the tune of $87 million, up from $59 million in 2022.
It’s becoming a national trend, too, with Ohio recently tallying more than $11 million in sales in its first 5 days of legalization this past August.
When Michigan became the first state in the Midwest to legalize recreational cannabis use in 2018, the region boldly embraced the much-maligned flower, beginning with Bangor Township Supervisor Glenn Rowley, whose office established clear standards and worked with local owners and owners from outside the state.
Bangor Township’s success in the early years has paved the way for Bay and Saginaw counties, with dispensaries now as ubiquitous as 7-Eleven or Starbucks. At the beginning of 2024, there were 994 dispensaries licensed to operate in Michigan. Only three states – California, Colorado, and Oklahoma (!) – had more.
In terms of revenue-sharing, only Wayne, Washtenaw, Oakland, and Kent counties earned more than Bay County in 2023. While dispensaries will continue to come and go, there are those that have found their secret sauce to sticking around and finding a niche in a community.
You want to find a corner store that sells 50-cent pre-rolls? You got it. You want to grow your own clones and exercise your own green thumb? No problem. From Wilder to Woodside to Lafayette to Broadway, you can find a shop that fits your style and your budget.
Leaders of the Pack
With four stores consisting of Saginaw East at 910 E. Genesee Ave, Saginaw West, which is located at 1030 Gratiot Ave., a Vassar location at 644 State Rd, and a store in Caro at 1023 E. Caro Rd., PREMIER Cannabis is one of the most friendly, well-stocked, and remarkably reasonable dispensaries populating the Great Lakes Bay Region.
According to Vassar store manager Kristy Woolvett, what distinguishes PREMIER from other regional dispensaries is the professionalism of their staff of trained budtenders.
“Our educated budtenders offer personalized service designed to meet the needs of our customers - especially to those who have not visited our stores before,” she explains. “Plus our pricing and product availability are equally distinguishing factors. We offer a wide range of products and the prices we sell them at offer some of the best deals in the area to our customers.”
Regarding their most popular strains of cannabis, Kristy says it’s hard to select simply one. “Considering that we have four stores, if you can’t find a particular strain we definitely have something comparable to that at one of our locations. It’s hard to pick just one because we always have such a wide variety of options.”
Native Son Detroit, 408 John St., at the corner of Catherine and John streets in the Midland Street Business District, has steadily built its clientele since opening in 2022. President and co-founder Lyndia Matthews is always looking for ways to distinguish her Bay City location while being a good neighbor in the community. Native Son organizes a food drive every Thanksgiving and is a member of the Bay City Chamber of Commerce.
Green Wednesday, an emerging holiday in the cannabis industry that takes place the day before Thanksgiving, will be celebrated at Native Son Detroit and throughout the region, promising more deals for consumers supporting the American dream through the pursuit of elevated happiness and financial prosperity.
Be sure to check out Native Son Detroit AND PREMIER’s Coupon in the print edition of The REVIEW to redeem any one of their featured promotional deals at any of their four locations by October 17th.
