The Saginaw Nouvel (4-5) boys basketball team got off to a slow start, then battled back for a 7-point deficit at halftime, before a forgetful third quarter led to a 60-52 Panther loss to Harbor Beach H.S. (4-4) at the Nouvel gym tonight.

Nouvel junior T.J. Raedy scored 8-points in the fourth quarter to lead an NCC comeback, however, Harbor Beach senior PG James Schelke (who played QB on a Pirates' football team which was knocked out of the 2017 MHSAA Div 8 football playoffs after a miraculous NCC comeback) scored 7 fourth quarter points, going 5 of 7 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to help secure the win for his Pirates.

Harbor Beach had jumped out to a 19-7 first quarter lead after senior guard Ryan Siemen got hot early, draining four straight 3-point shots in the opening quarter (while getting fouled on his fourth attempt before completing the four point play) along with a late layup to account for 15 of the Pirates' 19 first quarter points.

NCC junior Josh Kuligowski was brought in to shadow Siemen in the second quarter, shutting down the outside threat, as the NCC defense held the Pirates to just 10 second quarter points, while in contrast, the Panthers would go 8 for 10 from the free throw line in the second quarter, cutting the Harbor Beach lead to 29-22 at halftime.

The Pirates decided to take it down low in the third quarter, feeding 6-foot-7 big man, sophomore Evan Smaglinski, who scored 10 of his teams 20 third quarter points (all off the glass) to build a 49-35 lead through three quarters, a deficit from which the Panthers could not recover.

Siemens led Harbor Beach with a game high 21-points (including 6 three's) while Smaglinski poured in 16-points for the Pirates. Schelke added 13-points, and senior Grant Hanson followed with 8-points.

Nouvel was led by Raedy, who had 18-points, 4-rebounds, and 1-block (going 6 of 8 from the free throw line) while senior Peter Snyder was 1-point shy of a double-double, scoring 9-points to go along with 11-rebounds, 3-steals, and 4-blocks.

NCC senior Tate Hausbeck added 10-points with 5-rebounds, 1-steal, and 1-block, while junior Michael Ehlman followed with 8-points. Jacob Burr and Jonah Wright each had 3-points for the Panthers, while junior Chris Lemanek finished with 1-point.

Harbor Beach will host conference rival Memphis H.S. this Friday night for a 7:30 pm tip off at the Harbor Beach H.S. gymnasium, while Nouvel prepares to welcome Essexville Garber H.S. on Tuesday Jan. 23, right back here at the Nouvel gym for a 7 pm tip off.
