Saginaw Spirit General Manager Dave Drinkill announced the acquisition of RW Mike Davies from the Kitchener Rangers in exchange for a second-round and a fifth-round pick in the 2018 OHL priority selection draft, as well as a conditional fifth-round pick in 2019.

“We have been looking around the league for a player like Mike Davies for some time so we are pleased to welcome him to the Saginaw Spirit family,” Drinkill said in a press release Tuesday. “Mike is a big bodied power forward that will help the team in all different aspects of the game. He has always been a pure goal scorer. Those types of players are a commodity and don't come around very often, so when you get a chance to acquire a player like this, you make the move.”

The 18 year-old Thorold, ON native was a first-round selection of the Rangers in the 2013 OHL priority selection draft. Davies, a 6-foot-2 inch 200-pound forward will bring some size to grind in the corners and in front of the net. Davies, in his third OHL season, scored 47 goals in 61 games with the Southern Tier Admirals AAA Midget program.

“Like many young players drafted high into this league, it takes time to find their game,” continued Drinkill. “Sometimes a fresh start, opportunity, and new found confidence is needed and I believe this to be the case in Mike. We are excited to get him into a Spirit uniform and help us continue to add to our strong core of young talent.”

Davies knows he had a slow start to his OHL career and will be looking to make a fresh new start here in Saginaw.

“I am really excited to join the Saginaw Spirit organization,” Davies said in a press release from the team. “We have a very exciting team with a lot of good, young hockey players. Things started off a little slow for me in my career so I see this as a second chance to start fresh. I am going to take this opportunity and run with it.”

Davies will make his Spirit debut against his old team Friday at the 'Aud' in Kitchener, ON. The Spirit will continue their three-game road trip with a game against the Barrie Colts Saturday and the Owen Sound Attack on Sunday before returning to the Dow Event Center on Nov. 21 to host the Erie Otters.
