The Saginaw Spirit have its backs against the wall after suffering a 4-2 loss to the Owen Sound Attack at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre in Owen Sound, ON tonight.

The Spirit now must win its final three games and hope for Sarnia to lose its final three games in order to gain the six points needed for the final western conference playoff spot.

Owen Sound would get three straight second period goals from Nick Suzuki, Markus Phillips, and Petras Palmu respectively to build a 4-1 lead from which the Spirit could not recover.

Early in the game, Suzuki had given Owen Sound a 1-0 lead (41) with his first of two goals on the night at 4:57 of the first period with assists coming from Sean Durzi and Trenton Bourque.

The Spirit answered midway through the opening period when rookie Damien Giroux (8) intercepted a defenseman's pass, creating a breakaway to beat Attack goal tender Michael McNiven and tie the game at 1-goal apiece with his eighth of the season at 12:58 of the first period.

Spirit forward Hayden Hodgson (37) cut the Owen Sound lead to two goals 4-2 with his thrity-seventh goal of the season from Matthew Kreis late in the second period at the 15:54 mark, however, that would be the end of the Saginaw offense tonight.

Spirit goal tender Evan Cormier stopped 23 of the 27 shots he faced in net, while his counterpart, McNiven turned away 23 of the 25 Spirit shots.

The Spirit will be paying close attention to the Sarnia game against this very Owen Sound Attack team at the Progressive Auto Sales Arena in Sarnia, ON tomorrow afternoon.

The Spirit will now try to regroup as it prepares for a home-and-home series with the Soo Greyhounds 7:05 pm Wednesday night at the Dow Event Center, followed by a 7:07 pm game at the Essar Centre in Sault Ste. Marie, ON Friday night before returning home for its final game of the season at 7:05 pm against the Windsor Spitfires on Saturday night.
