Sault Ste. Marie, ON

Less than 24 hours after the Saginaw Spirit beat the Soo Greyhounds 4-3 at the Dow Event Center, the Greyhounds returned the favor, but needed to force overtime for a 5-4 shootout win over the Spirit at the Essar Centre in Sault Ste. Marie, ON this afternoon.

After the Greyhounds were whistled for a 2-minute tripping penalty at 15:58 of the first period, Soo forwards Jack Kopacka and Morgan Frost scored back to back shorthanded goals less than five seconds apart to take a 2-0 Soo lead in the first period.

Saginaw's No. 1 pick in the 2017 OHL priority selection draft, Nick Porco (who was playing in front of his hometown crowd) went coast to coast to get the Spirit on the board just :48 seconds into the second period for a 2-1 game.

The Soo answered with a power play goal from Zach Trott to take a 3-1 lead at 4:59 of the second period.

Spirit 2017 under-18 draft pick, Nate Boomhower made it a 3-2 game when he beat Soo goal tender Matthew Villalta over the right shoulder later in the second period from Danny Katic and Ryan Stepien.

Saginaw veteran forward Cole Coskey tied the game at 3-goals apiece with his second goal of the exhibition season at 2:33 of the third period.

The Spirit would take the lead 4-3 when Camaryn Baber (another Sault Ste. Marie native playing in front of his home crowd) redirected a Keaton Middleton shot from the point past Villalta midway through the third period.

Trott crashed the net after the Soo pulled its goalie and scored his second of the day to tie the game, sending it to overtime, then a shootout where the Greyhound's eventually won by a shootout advantage.

The Spirit return home for its third exhibition game Friday against the Flint Firebirds at the Dow Event Center before wrapping up the exhibition season at the Dort Federal Event Center against the Firebirds Saturday night in a home and home series.
