Spirit GM Dave Drinkill announced the hiring of goalie coach A.J. Walczak in an email press release from the team this afternoon.

“We are thrilled to be able to add A.J. to the Saginaw Spirit family in the position as our new Goalie Coach,” Drinkill said. “He comes very highly recommended from many people in the Michigan area and we are excited for him to get to work with our goal tenders. A.J. is exactly what we were looking for when looking to fill this position. His passion, dedication, and drive make him the perfect fit for us now, and going forward. As a staff, we can't wait to get started in this upcoming season.”

The 36 year old Walczak has been partners with former Detroit Red Wings goal tender Manny Legace, running the Legace Hockey Academy in Wixom, MI where he has developed many successful goalies at all levels of the game, including Vezina tophy winner Sergei Bobrovski (Columbus Blue Jackets), Andrei Vasilevskiy (Tampa Bay Lightning), and 2016 Calgary Flames' draft pick Tyler Parsons.

“I am very excited to join such a dynamic organization and become part of the Spirit family,” Walczak said. “I look forward to working with the talented staff in Saginaw and further developing the talent crop of goal tenders.”
