ANN ARBOR, MI- On a perfect day weather wise in Ann Arbor the University of Michigan opened the 2016 College Football season with a huge victory over visiting Hawaii 63-3.   In front of 110,222 fans at the Big House rolled to a big win keeping the faithful happy on this Saturday afternoon.   Things didn't start quite as expected with starting quarterback Wilton Speight throwing his first pass as a starter and throwing an interception.  This brought the Big House to a very quiet start.   However things got going rather quickly.

On the next possession Speight starting inside the 10 yard line moved the team down the field and got the Wolverines on the scoreboard.   The junior quarterback would finish the day with a 10 for 13 passing performance with 145 yards and 3 touchdown passes.    They rolled to 35-0 halftime lead and it was over at that point.  Some of the highlights of the day actually started before the game itself.

Michigan with its new clothing deal with Nike/Michael Jordan had several celebrities in the Big House including Michael Jordan, Derek Jeter and U of M stars Charles Woodson and LaMar Woodley to help with the coin toss.   On this sunny afternoon Michigan would get a chance to play many true freshman in their first collegiate action.   17 players would get into the blowout over Hawaii today.   It also was the 266th straight game at the Big House of attendance over 100,000 fans.

Wolverine freshman Chris Evans would have a good day rushing with 112 yards on 8 attempts and 2 touchdowns.   Tight End/team captain Jake Butts would score early in the 1st quarter on a touchdown pass.   The Wolverines would put the game away in the second half with two touchdown returns on interceptions from Channing Stribling and Deland Hill.

Jim Harbaugh's Wolverines open the 2016 campaign with 5 straight home contests.  They will now face the Central Florida next Saturday at the Big House.  Big things are expected this year from the Wolverines.
