The Year in Sports 2024

The Detroit Lions are 10-1 for the first time in forever, Tarik Skubal (Tiger Pitcher) won the 2024 Cy Young award with an 18-4 record, Nelly Korda was named female golfer of the year, and Mike Tyson lost in his comeback - HELLO HE IS 58!   These are but a few of the big stories in the wild world of sports in 2024.

Unreal fact: Anna Kournikova is worth $60 million! At the Ladies CME Jeeno Thitkul won $4 million. For the year in the LPGA Jeeno won $ 6,059,309. Nelly won $4,391,930.00.  Pavel Datsyuk went into the hockey HOF. Sidney Crosby scored his 600^Th Goal. Caitlin Clark was the WNBA Rookie of Year! Alex Ovechkin scored 15 goals chasing the NHL record and then got hurt and was out for 6 weeks. Christiano Ronaldo (Soccer) makes $138 Million a year!

Brooks Robinson passed at age 86.  He was a true gentleman and the greatest fielding 3^rd baseman in the history of baseball.. The Detroit Lions beat Green Bay 34-20 to go 3-1. The Packers only got 1 yard in the first quarter. Tim Wakefield Boston pitcher is gone at 57. Football’s biggest bad ass ever Dick Butkus (Chicago Bears) has died at age 80. He was the line coach for the Green Bay Packers at the time of his death.

NHL Wonder boy Connor Bedard scored his first goal against Boston on Oct.11^Th. Former Tiger Nick Castellanos hit 4 homeruns in back-to-back in MLB playoff games, a feat that has never been done before! The Detroit Tigers have had 7 straight losing seasons.

Willie Herandez passed away at age 69 in November. We were in the stadium when he closed out game 5 to win the 1984 World Series. Big Game-Great Game: Michigan 30-24. It made it a 3-Peat over Ohio State. Michigan won the two before it: 42-27 & 45-23. QB J.J. McCarthy led the way. In his 2 years with Michigan: 13-1/12-0. 62.9%/46 TDS/5718 yards.

Brent Venables (Oklahoma Coach) was run over by his own players running onto the field to play TCU. They went on to win 60-45. Swimmer Riley Gaines sued the NCAA & got $1.2 million. Kansas City Quarterback  Mahomes said he wears the same underwear for a month at a time - STUPID!

The Saginaw Spirit won 10 straight hockey games. This year’s Doak Walker award went to Michigan’s Blake Corum. Blake had 202 carries - 976 yards- 22 TDS-4 .8 per carry. The Red Wings are back under Yzerman. First 20 games: 11-6-3. The Green Bay Packers ran over the Lions 29-22 on Thanksgiving - NOT NICE!

Novak Djokovic finally lost in a major in the 2024 Australia Open. He lost to Jennik Sinner 6-1/6-2/6-7/6-3.  Elena Rybakina won her 2^nd straight Australian open in a row beating China’s Quinwen Zhengn. Michigan now has a football coach for 2024, Sherrone Moore, the first ever Afro-American coach  in Michigan’s Football history. He was 4-0 replacing Jim Harbaugh and for beating Ohio State 30-24. 

Luke Doncic (Dallas) was called a fat ass by a hometown fan. The next game he scored 73 points (it is the 4^th highest ever).   New members of the Baseball HOF. Adrian Beltre, Joe Mauer, Todd Helton, Manager Jim Leyland (22 years, 1750 wins.)

The Baltimore Orioles sold for $1.7 billion. The K.C. Royals signed Bobby Whitt to a contract  -$288.8 million for 11 years. Who in the hell is Bobby Whitt? Sporting News named Lion Dan Campbell NFL Coach of the Year

The U of M Football team had a historic season: 15-0/National Championship/beat Ohio State for the 3^rd straight time and beat BAMA in the Rose Bowl. Patrick Mahomes won his 3^rd Super Bowl – beating San Francisco 25-22 in overtime. Travis Kelce in the 1^st half threw a fit with his 65 yr. old coach. I have zero respect for him. San Francisco kicker Jake Moody (UofM) missed an extra point causing his team to lose. USA Hockey won the 17 and under World Hockey title.

Caitlin Clark-Iowa’s basketball player-set the all-time scoring record -  she is the GOAT. Hideki Matsuyama shot a 62 on the last day to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational and $4 Million. Iowa won the Girls Big Ten Basketball Title. There is a one-armed basketball player named Hansel Immanuel from the Dominican Republic who is very good. He plays for Austin Peay.

NFL Draft in Detroit: 750,000 fans. In the draft thirteen U of M players were picked. The Red Wings just missed the playoffs. 2024 Lions are rated #1 in the NFC. Michigan Basketball will be great this year. Michigan QB J.J. McCarthy will get $22 Million from the Vikings. Caitlin Clark scored 21 pts in her first WNBA game.

Lions QB Jared Goff signed for $212 Million - NOT BAD. The NHL bumped the cap from $83.5 million to $88. Caitlin Clark was not picked for the USA Olympic team BUT Brittney Griner made the team -SHAMEFUL.  Scottie Scheffler beat Morikawa by one shot to win the Memorial. “Dornoch” won the Belmont Stakes -he was 17-1. The horse is owned by former baseball player Jason Werth.

The Florida Panthers won game 7, after losing 3 straight to the Oiler’s, to win the cup. McDavid was the MVP. Tiger Wood’s son Charlie is one great golfer. Scottie Scheffler has won 6 PGA tournaments. Lion QB Jarred Goff married a swim suit model (SHOCKER) and her name is Christen Harper Saginaw’s Spencer Schwellenbach (has some kind of name plate) and is a pitcher with Atlanta.

Tampa’s hockey coach Jon Copper will be behind the bench for team Canada in the 2025 Olympics. Red Wing great Pavel Datsyuk is in the hockey HOF. The Sharks made Boston College’s Macklin Celebrini the number one pick in the NHL draft. After the Tampa lightning lost Steven Stamkos they signed Victor Hedman to a 4 year contract at $8 Million a year.

Red Wing great Marty Pavelich passed at age 96. The Dow Golf Champs were: Athaya Thitkul & Ruoning Yin - both got $366,000. The Pistons #1 pick was Ron Holland, a 6’7- 206 pound guard.

Tiger Woods missed the cut at the British Open. It was won by Xander Schauffele with a -6. He was named Golfer of the Year. Nelly Korda was bitten by a dog and then missed the cut for two months. NFL Power Rankings: The Lions are at #3. NHL Power Rankings: Edmonton is #1. ‘

Olympics Recap: The Olympic Committee in France OK’D drag Queens doing the “Last Supper. French swimmer Leon Marchand won two golds in a weekend - one was a world record. Tom Pidcock from England won a gold in mountain biking - he took the lead in the last 10 minutes (Unreal). Ukrainian High Jumper Yaroslava Mahuchikn won the Gold, as her country gets blown to hell by the Russians. The useless Chicago White lost 20 straight games. Scottie Scheffler shot a 62 on the last day for the Gold Medal.  Trinity Rodman scored the only goal beating Japan 1-0. Tennis Goat Novak Djokovic won the Olympic Gold in tennis winning 7-6 & 7-6. Caitlin Clark was NOT put on the USA basketball team: STUPID. USA Medal Count 126 with 40 Golds. USA Men’s Basketball beat France 98 - 87. Wembanyama had 26 points for France. Italy’s girls beat the USA in Volleyball in  3 straight sets. Lydia Ko won the ladies gold in golf. Nelly Korda placed 22^nd. USA beat Brazil 1-0 in soccer for the gold. Track Star Sydney McLaughlin is the best lady runner I have ever seen!

The Chicago “White-Sucks” had a record of 31-101. The Tigers won game one in the playoffs, beating Houston 3-1/Skubal: 6 innings-6 K’S. The Saginaw Spirit’s Michael Misa scored 7 goals in 3 games Rookie Paul Skenes: 11-3/1.96 ERA/170 K’s. Lions beat Dallas 47-9-but lost “Hutch” for 8 months. Don Cherry is back. Oregon beat Ohio State 32-31 (Love It). Tigers lost game 5 to Cleveland. Luis Tiant passed at age 83.

Steven Stamkos came home with his Preds & lost to Tampa in O.T. 3-2.  Michigan beat MSU again in football. The Lions killed the Titans 52-14, it was the screwiest game I have ever seen. Indiana has a very good college football team, for the first time in forever!  In the World Series the Yankees lost out to the Dodgers in 5. Playoff Duds: Ontani .230 BA-3 HRS/Judge .161-2 HRS.
