Bay City Town Hall: Redistricting Reform Ballot Proposal

Posted in: Instructional

WHAT: Redistricting Reform Town Hall, Bay City
WHEN: 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10
WHERE: State Theater, 913 Washington Ave, Bay City, Michigan 48708
WHO: Voters Not Politicians, a non-partisan ballot committee seeking to put before voters a proposal to end gerrymandering in Michigan.
WHY: This is an opportunity for voters to learn about gerrymandering and discuss the proposed redistricting reform amendment to the Michigan State Constitution. Registered voters will be able to sign a petition needed to place the amendment on the 2018 state ballot.
DETAILS: Voters Not Politicians is proposing to ask voters to amend the Michigan State Constitution to deny partisan politicians the ability to manipulate voting district boundaries to secure their own hold on power. The measure would give the authority for drawing those boundaries to an Independent Citizens’ Redistricting Commission.
Some 316,000 signatures of registered Michigan voters are needed to place the proposal on the November 2018 ballot. In an all-volunteer effort, Voters Not Politicians has already gathered more than 200,000 signatures in just over six weeks since beginning to circulate petitions, an average of more than 4,000 a day, obtaining signatures in every one of Michigan’s 83 counties.
