Misconceptions

Through both the visual and language arts, this exhibition addresses the issue of false perception in contemporary society, specifically as it applies to the African American community. The problem of fixation on one or another’s skin color is explored, along with the resulting assumptions and their effects on forcibly labeled individuals. Indeed, this body of work, a collaboration between Detroit-based painter Waleed Johnson and poet Jenai Jackson, seeks to awaken the viewer to the emotional responses conjured by such labels, and implores them to rethink any pre-conceived notions of race. Functioning as personal mementos, these works provide an opportunity to further interpersonal understanding through intimate communication and expression. Runs thru March 18th.
